Our History
History of North Walsham in Bloom
We first formed a group in 1998 under the umbrella of the North Walsham Town Council but it was soon decided that we should become independent and subsequently made our first entry in Anglia in Bloom in 1999.
We are a small group of volunteers, when all are counted about 20 people but of course not everyone is available all the time. Most of our group are women and mainly of rather mature years. This does not prevent us from having a go and trying to do different things each year.
We have a committee of seven and meet on a monthly basis most of the year, a little more often around planting time.
We do as much fund-raising as we can but we do receive a substantial grant from the Town Council which allows us to pay someone to water the hanging baskets and tubs from June to end September.
We have the hanging baskets made up for us by a local nursery who also supply us with our plants at a good price. These are offered to all the shops in town at a fee which includes watering and care . Unfortunately not all shops wish to take part in the scheme but they are very few. We also get sponsorship from several local businesses and organisations like the Lions and Rotary. We do apply for grants where we can and endeavour to improve our performance year on year.
We have good relations with both local newspapers who willingly publish our press releases and also Radio Norfolk who often give us air time to ask for help or to advertise ourselves.
We also run “Best Garden Competition” in the town and there are some excellent gardens.
